MedicaSafe is a medical device company developing a connected solution that provides real-time dispensation data to healthcare professionals. The device enables clinicians to monitor and treat patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) by delivering accurate daily dosing, enforcing dispensation limits, and supporting data-driven care decisions.
Challenge
Create multi-platform UI/UX for a drug device combination system called BunaTrack.
Scope of work included:
Design user centric interactions for all user groups (patient, pharmacist, and physician).
Make sure to indicate any risks associated with the use of the product following the guidance from the FDA.
Designing user interface and user experience for the medical device.
Designing user interface for the enrollment and prescribing processes for the monitoring system.
Managing risk mitigation methods including Human Factors studies and URRA (User Related Risk Assessment).
Creating Instructions for Use and Quick Reference Guide for the device.
Follow though the responses received from the FDA regarding Human Factors and User Related Risks.
Create labeling for all components of the system.
findings
Since the scope of work had evolved to be more than just designing UI/UX, I had to expand beyond the canvas to understand and acknowledge importance of the guidance and requirements for the overall drug device combination system.
Design simple. Create more directed approach to minimize use errors.
Review all interactions within the system from the perspective of each user group.
Users are meant to misuse the device as intended, try to mimic the natural behavior to minimizr misuse.
Map out all the possible user tasks and system actions to better understand areas of concern/focus.

The device interface was designed in considerations of the following:
No gesture controls due to the refresh rate and resolution on hardware limitations.
Design the interface so it will be simple yet easy to use.
Follow the grade reading level set by the risk mitigation.
Create all screens for every possible outcomes and share with software development team.

The most complicated and challenging portion of the project was to design patient facing interface. All of the screens had to follow strict and rigid Human Factors regulations and had to be tested by intended users before submitting for approval.
DEsigning the portal
Goals while designing the portal consisted of:
Simple process to link the patient, physician, prescription, and device data during creation of treatment.
Detailed report of patient activities for physicians to monitor.
Consider the level of complexity for critical tasks to be tested in Human Factors testings.
